Morgan Rogers Leads England's Number Ten Contenders

Tuesday, December 16, 2025 - 9 hours ago

Morgan Rogers, a key player for Aston Villa, has been instrumental in the team's recent resurgence, with a nine-game winning streak across all competitions. During this period, Rogers has scored four goals and provided three assists, including the winner against West Ham on December 14. His impressive form has made him the leading candidate to start in England's number ten position at the next World Cup. England has a talented pool of players vying for the number ten role, including Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham, and Cole Palmer. However, Rogers' performance against West Ham stands out, showcasing his ability to take control of the game and make a difference. He drifted in from the left, took control of Villa's attacking play, and scored a crucial goal in the 50th minute to restore parity. His underlying numbers were also impressive, with 61 touches, four in the opposition box, and three passes into the final third.

Comparing Rogers to his competitors, England has different types of number tens to choose from. Rogers prefers to play on the left and then come inside, playing between the lines of the left-back and the centre-back. Cole Palmer plays in a similar way, but on the right. Jude Bellingham is more of an 8/10, dropping deeper and using his ability to read the game to create chances. Phil Foden is probably Rogers' biggest threat for the number ten shirt, with impressive form and 14 goal contributions across all competitions.

One advantage Rogers has over Foden is Thomas Tuchel's favor, having been featured in all of England's squads since the German took over, starting six of his ten appearances. While it's theoretically possible to play all four players together, it would be too narrow and expose other English players to opposition full-backs. Ultimately, Tuchel will choose the best option for the team, rather than trying to cram in every big name.

Based on current form and potential, Rogers is the best option to start in the number ten role. While Foden has better numbers, Rogers has the potential to match them if he were playing for Manchester City. Villa is lucky to have Rogers on their books, and he has no reason to leave if they continue their winning streak.
